Ursa Major & Minor

Image
All of you must have seen a kite like star constellation towards North in the sky. It's called Ursa Major .If you extend the line through the outer stars you get Polaris & a smaller replica of Ursa Major which is called as Ursa Minor. Ursa Major is among the most known and oldest constellations. It has the greatest number of  stars compared to all other constellations. The Romans called the constellation Septentrio, or “seven plough oxen,” even though only two of the seven stars represented oxen, while the others formed a wagon.   In Hindu legend, the brightest stars of Ursa Major represent the Seven Sages and the constellation is known as Saptarshi. The sages in question are Bhrigu, Atri, Angirasa, Vasishta, Pulastya, Pulalaha and Kratu. Ursa Major is primarily known from the asterism  of its main seven stars, which has been called the "Big   Dipper ," "the Wagon," "Charles's Wain," or "the Plough," among other names.  Today  Friday,11 June ,3rd month of Hindu calendar started , that is Jyeshth. The name is given from Jyestha Nakshatra ; Antares which is in Vrishchik Rashi; Scorpion constellation. Vrishchik means Scorpio.Jyestha is on the tummy of Scorpio. There are 3 stars, the middle one very bright & red is Jyestha; Antares. It is red like Mangal;Mars, therefore called pratimangal; Antares. Anuradha Nakshatra In the Scorpion mouth there are 3 stars, the middle one Anuradha. The Vishakha Nakshatra was called Radha in old days. After that it comes so Anuradha. At the sting of Scorpio , there is Mul Nakshatra. Greek story The stubborn son Fetan of Suryadev;Appolo drived the horses of Surya's chariot furiously,a horrible Scorpio came in the way & the horses galloped. Corona Borealis(Uttar Mukoot)

Image
In my last post we have seen Arcturus in Bootes constellation. Exactly below it you can see C type Corona Borealis(Uttar Mukoot) with glittering seven stars. Corona Borealis (“the northern crown”) is a small but recognizable horseshoe shaped constellation that is found in a relatively empty part of northern sky.  It is said to represent the crown of a princess who was given the gift by her husband. After marriage ,he merrily tossed the crown into the celestial heavens.   Its jewels transformed into the stars of this beautiful constellation.  Corona Borealis’s brightest member, Alphecca, is a white star situated 75 light years from Earth that shines with a visual magnitude of +2.23. It's called as Uttar Mukut in India & also called as अरुंधती केश (arundhati kesh). Hope you enjoying the posts. Do comment. We will see another interesting story in next post. Till then good bye.
