Arundhati kesh(Coma berenices)

 


Berenice was queen of Egypt in 245 BC. Her name meant bringer of victory, and she was renown for her striking beauty, and the loveliness of her long golden hair(coma).

When her husband, King Ptolemy III, left to lead his armies to war against the Syrians, Berenice prayed every day to the Venus Goddess, for his safe return. 

When news came that the war was going badly, she cut off her beautiful golden hairs, and laid them on the alter as an offering, in the hopes that it might please the goddess, and she would protect her husband.

Ptolemy returned safe and victorious the next day. When he knew  his wife's sacrifice, he went to the alter himself to thank the goddess for her protection, only to find the alter empty, and the queen's hair stolen. 

In a rage, he vowed to kill all the priests who tended the alter. 

But that night, the royal astronomer, Conon, came to the king's court, and announced that the missing hair had been found.

 He stepped outside and pointed at an area of the sky between the herdsman (Bootes), and the lion (Leo), announcing that Venus was so impressed with the queen's offering, she took the long golden hairs herself, and placed them in the sky, to honour the queen. And sure enough, there was a group of sparkling stars right where Conon was pointing, the perfect celestial image of the queen's long flowing  hairs .



The mystery of the missing hair was solved, and the grouping of stars became known as the constellation Coma Berenices (Berenice's Hair).

In Hindu mythology it's called as hairs of Arundhati(Arundhati Kesh).

 Welcome again to Nakshatra yatra.  The next Nakshatra is Hast,which is 13th in the order, also it's the last Nakshatra of mansoon. In this Nakshatra, the crop is nourished very well. It's shape is like hand,so the name Hast. First see Saptarshi in the North. If you extend the line from last star of Saptarshi on a curved path, you can see 2 bright stars .        The Red one is Swati (Arcturus) & the Blue one is Chitra (Spica). Extend the line further,then you get a pentagon in the shape of a hand, that's Hast. If we put a ball at Saptarshi,it will go on rolling on an imaginary line, till it is caught by Hast. The stars are very bright,so it's called as  necklace in the sky. So these are13th,14th & 15th Nakshatras. The Rashi is Kanya,the 6th one. It's called Virgo in English. Bhadrapad Month , the 6th one, started on 4 September 2024, when the Poorva Bhadrapada  Nakshtra rising in the East. Poorva Bhadrapada is part of Pegasus Constellation. It's called as Great horse महाश्व,उचै:श्रवा in Hindu mythology. The Rashi is Kumbh rashi,the 11th one & it consists of 3 Nakshatras,Dhanishthaधनिष्ठा ,the 23rd,Shatatarka शततारका ,the 24th  & Poorva Bhadrapada, पूर्वा भाद्रपदा the 25th .  Kumbha Rashi stands for the zodiac sign Aquarius and is ruled by 2 important planets that is (Saturn and Rahu).  Dhanishtha is Delphinus constellation,it's shape is like Dolphin 🐬 The name Dhanishta means "the wealthiest" or "the most beneficent" Though the name is Shatatarka,these stars are very faint, you can not see them. With these features we can study Mars from Earth through telescope.
