Sirius

 


Sirius  is the brightest star in the night sky. 

It's name is derived from the Greek word Seirios means"glowing" or "scorching". The star is designated α Canis Majoris.

Sirius is a binary star consisting of Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion Sirius B

 Although white to blue-white in color, Sirius might be called a rainbow star, as it often flickers with many colors.

Due to the brightness, twinkling and color changes  people sometimes report Sirius as a UFO!

In fact, these changes happens when such a bright star as Sirius shines through the blanket of Earth’s atmosphere. The varying density and temperature of Earth’s air affect starlight, especially when we’re seeing the star low in the sky.

Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System, so it will slightly increase in brightness over the next 60,000 years. 

Sirius system is one of Earth's nearest neighbours.

Sirius A is about twice as massive as the Sun .It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun.The system is between 200 and 300 million years old.It was originally composed of two bright bluish stars. The more massive of these, Sirius B, consumed its resources and became a red jaint  before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into its current state as a white dwarf around 120 million years ago.

Stories related to Sirius

In some countries it's associated with aliens.They believe that aliens had come from this star.It is called dog star of Orion.

If you extend the arrow in the stomach of deer (Mrug) (Orion) you get Sirius.In India it's the hunter or Vyadh. 

The story goes like this.

One of the first major Gods of creation Prajapati,brahma felt love towards a girl called Rohini.She run  away taking a form of female deer. He approched her in the form of Mrug. The Gods appointed Rudra, to shoot an arrow thru the stag. Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the sky, shots the arrow. 

The full story is illustrated in the sky;
the innocent lovely rohini (aldebaran ) the infamous prajapati (orion) after her, but laid sprawling by the three pointed arrow ( thebelt of orion) which shot from the hand of near avenger ( Sirius) the arrow is even now seen sticking in his body.
We know these 3 stars as Orion’s belt. These 3 stars are Agni, Soma and Visnu. Agni is the shaft, Soma the head, and Visnu is the point of the arrow.

Visnu is the solar or supreme god. Soma is the ambrosia or nectar of the gods. Agni is the god of fire.

Another story from Maha bharatha

In maha bharatha , Sirius is sometimes known as the God Dharma takes the form of Svana, the dog of Prince Yudhistira. The prince and his four brothers, along with Svana, set out on a long and exhausting journey to find the kingdom of heaven. However, one by one the brothers all abandoned the search until only Yudhistira and Svana were left. At long last they came to the gates of heaven. The gatekeeper, Lord Indra, welcomed the prince but denied Svana entrance. Yudhistira was aghast and told Lord Indra that he could not forsake his good and faithful servant and friend. His brothers, Yudhistira told the Lord, had abandoned the journey to heaven to follow their hearts’ desires. But Svana, who had given his heart freely, chose to follow none but Yudhistira. The prince told the Lord that without his dog, he would forsake even heaven. This is what Lord Indra had wanted to hear, and then he welcomed both the prince and the dog through the gates of heaven.

 Welcome again to Nakshatra yatra.  The next Nakshatra is Hast,which is 13th in the order, also it's the last Nakshatra of mansoon. In this Nakshatra, the crop is nourished very well. It's shape is like hand,so the name Hast. First see Saptarshi in the North. If you extend the line from last star of Saptarshi on a curved path, you can see 2 bright stars .        The Red one is Swati (Arcturus) & the Blue one is Chitra (Spica). Mrug (Orion)Part 1

15 December,2020, Tuesday,Dev Deepawali. Starting of Marathi month Margashirsh.(Head of a deer) In this month you can see Mrug Nakshatra in the East rising in the evening.It is Orion in English meaning hunter . It's the brightest & most beautiful object in the  sky. I personally like this Nakshatra very much. As we have seen earlier half of Mrug Nakshatra comes in Vrushabh Rashi & other half in Mithun Rashi. As the Mrug or Orion  is a big constellation it's story is also big,so let's divide it in two parts. In this part we will know about the story of the constellation & how to spot it in the sky. It's very easy to see because all the stars are bright of this constellation. At 8 pm , in the East, you can see 4 bright stars & 3 stars in straight line in between. Sky in February( 12,3,4)Nakshatras Ashwini (1)Bharani (2)Krittika (3)Rohini (4)

 See the beautiful Mrug Nakshatra in South-East corner at 8 p.m. It is a rectangle with 4 stars.At the boundary ,4 feets of Mrug & the arrow piercing through it's belly consisting of 3 stars. You can spot the 3 stars in line easily.  If you extend the line westward ,there's a red star which is Rohini. After a while when your eyes  are adapted for darkness the 'V' shape of Rohini Nakshatra can be seen.  If you extend it further just a bit offside a group of 6 stars  can be seen which is Pleiades (Krittika). After getting Krittika, go for a small equilateral triangle, all stars are faint in this triangle. It's Bharani Nakshatra.  Then go for 2 bright stars which are close to each other, the third star forms an abtuse angle. This is Ashwini Nakshatra.  Ashwini means horse.It looks like Horsehead in inverse direction,so the name.  These are first 4 nakshtras. Ashwini ,Bharani,Krittika, Rohini.
